The reputation of the ‘master of reversals’ did not go anywhere. Even after the school name was changed, Gunsan Sangil High School was a master of reversal. Although he faced a crisis of defeat, he won the Presidential Cup after an all-out war that put the beast on the mound.
Gunsan Sangil High School defeated Incheon High School 11-10, 9th inning, in the final of the 57th Presidential Cup National High School Baseball Championship held at Mokdong Baseball Stadium in Seoul on the 14th. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with one out and bases loaded, Park Chan-woo ended the game with a large batted ball that landed near the left fence.
Gunsan Commercial High School is a traditional powerhouse that won the Presidential Cup three times during Gunsan Commercial High School. However, the last championship was in 1986. This year, after changing the name of the school to Gunsan Sangil High School, I felt the thrill of winning the first championship.
Incheon High School took the lead in the first inning. Gunsan Sangil High School selector Lee Byung-joo turned the first ball hunting into an opportunity. In the first inning with 2 outs on 1st and 2nd base, Kim Ji-seok struck a heavy hit at the right time. The lightly hit ball slightly crossed the height of the second baseman and landed in front of the center fielder, leading Incheon High School to take the lead. Lee Tae-oh’s walk filled the bases, and Kim Joon-won hit two RBIs on time to make the score 3-0.
Gunsan Sangil High School put in ace Park Seung-ho as the second pitcher even before the first inning was over. Park Seung-ho struck out Woo-jun Lee on a swing and blocked the extra point. Gunsan Sangil High School seized the opportunity to recover 1st, 1st and 3rd bases in the ensuing attack. 4th hitter Kang Min-jae caught up with 1 point with a timely hit.
Both teams finished the second inning scoreless. But the lull was short-lived. In the 3rd inning of Incheon High School, Han Kyu-hyeok, the lead hitter, hit a long hit. He ran with long legs and landed on third base. In the safe third base, Lim Gyu-young made it 4-1 with a timely hit that passed the side of the second base.
Gunsan Sangil High School did not stand still. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, 3 walks gave him a chance to load the bases with 1 out. Choi Siwon easily made up for one point with a wild throw from the plate. Another walk led to the bases loaded with 1 out, and the ground ball to the shortstop of Republic of Korea bounced wide, and the runner on 3rd hit home, making the score 3-4.
Even though the name of the school changed, the reputation of the ‘master of reverses’ remained the same. Gunsan Sangil High School reversed the game in the bottom of the 5th inning. Minguk’s missed ball led to a timely hit to tie the score between the second baseman and the right fielder. In the first run with bases loaded, Lee Jun-woo picked out a push-out walk and the score was overturned to 5-4.
It did not collapse even after the tie was allowed. In the 6th inning, when the score was tied at 5-5, Min-guk scored a timely hit to the left to regain the lead. In the ensuing run with bases loaded, Park Chan-woo widened the score gap by picking out a walk against the changed pitcher Jung Hyeon-woo and pushing it away. When Lee Jun-woo’s shortstop grounded, the third base runner scored, and the second baseman made an error, and Gunsan Sangil High School ran away to 9-5. It was the moment when the difference in points was widest in the match.메이저놀이터
There was a crisis until the end. Gunsan Sangil High School allowed Incheon High School to tie the game 10-10 in the 8th inning. After two outs, pitchers were not enough, so Kang Min-je, who was third baseman, took the mound. Kang Min-jae tied the score by sending the third base runner in with a wild throw.
However, the tie in the 8th inning was just a process to make Gunsan Sangil High School’s victory more dramatic. Kang Min-je climbed the mound in the top of the 9th inning and blocked one inning with no runs. As an infielder, he handled the pitcher’s ground ball neatly.
In the bottom of the ninth, lead batter Lim Joo-hwan recorded a hit to the left with a sharp batted ball. After accumulating runners with opponent check errors and bunt hits, he had an opportunity to safely load the bases. Here, Kim Jong-hoo seized a chance to finish against Koo Gyo-jin, and hit a sharp hit with a heavy hit, but was blocked by Incheon High School’s outfield forward defense. The next hitter, Park Chan-woo, ended the game with a big ball.
